António Guterres begins his term as Secretary General of the UN

The new Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, his five-year term officially starts after taking the oath on December 12, 2016.

António Guterres, former Prime Minister of Portugal (1995-2002) and former UN High Commissioner for Refugees (2005-2015), was sworn in on 12 December after the tribute to the outgoing Secretary General Ban Ki-moon , After first world organization in the last 10 years.

In his first official message, the Secretary-General launched a global call for peace in 2017.

Commenting on the message of the United Nations Resident Coordinator Secretaries-General and Representative of UNDP Resident Una McCauley said that "The issue of peace is particularly relevant given that Sri Lanka is in a unique position to forge a path to peace Long-term and sustainable.
